Work !

What I actually do !

I'm an Embedded Software Engineer with an engineering degree in communications but my entire career has been software development at it's lowest level - and I love it. Embedded software is all the code that hides deep in anything that has a micro-processor embedded inside. Most of my work never gets seen - but that's cool.

Who I work for now and then...

Bose Corporation

Bose Lifestyle 35 DVD Home Theatre System Started January 2001 as Senior Software Engineer doing embedded audio software development. I spent 70+ hours a weeks for 6 months writing code, debugging, and listening to endless great music on a great system and I absolutely enjoyed the entire time - very challenging and extraordinarily rewarding - take a look.

Once the project was complete, they asked me head the engineering effort on the next generation - which is what I'm currently doing - officially I'm the Project Engineer - which sadly means I get to do very little coding anymore but the project management stuff is a blast.

Bose is by far the most exciting and enjoyable company I have worked for - as far as I am concerned, I have the ultimate job - I get to combine my two favorite loves of music and engineering with a team of very sharp cookies.

Bose is the first company I have worked for involved in consumer level electronics - other jobs to date have all been in industrial electronics.

Trimble Navigation

Trimble GeoExplorer 3 Trimble is the company that gave me the opportunity to move the the States and experience the American way of doing things. For this I am greatly appreciative. Jim Green was my boss and one cannot ask for a better boss than he. I learnt a lot working for Trimble and enjoyed it immensely.

Once again, I was responsible for the design and implementation of the software for a hand held GPS data logging device. This product is certainly one of my top achievements - take a look also.

There have been other jobs,

Prior to Trimble in the States I was working for Trimble in New Zealand working on the GeoExplorer 2 completing multi-lingual additions to the system - including Russian, a word of which I cannot speak.

Prior to that I was working on wireless data radio systems and Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) systems for a New Zealand company.

Prior to that, I was developing Supervisory Control and Remote Data Aquisition (SCADA) systems used for monitoring and controlling remote stations, primarily in water, power and sewage distribution. This was a cool job but it got boring after a year and half.

Prior to that I was working for the NZ government as a telecommunications cadet on airport landing systems.

I've also owned and operated a bakery with my then wife and worked as a wine waiter.
